What about Network Security?

The Library's wireless network is not secure. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and appropriate software, within two hundred feet. When using any network connection, including wireless, it is recommended that you NOT enable file sharing or print sharing to aid in preventing hackers access to your computer.

The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the Library's network.

Using virus protection, spyware protection, a personal firewall, and other measures to protect the information on your laptop is highly recommended, and is the sole responsibility of laptop users. Above all, do not leave your laptop unattended!

Where can I use my laptop?

You may use a laptop in any Adult or Young Adult section of the building. Laptops may not be used in the Children's area.

When is Wireless Service Available?

Wireless access is available during regular business hours, as posted in each location.

Is it possible to print from my laptop?

No. Public access computers are available in all libraries in Queens. Many have printing capabilities.

Will my laptop have access to everything available on the Internet?

Queens Library’s policy restricts access to some web site content, as a wireless network user you will be restricted from chat, games, and instant messaging.

If you are over 17 years of age, you may request broader access by using one of the library’s public use computer workstations. Chat, games and instant messaging will continue to be blocked as a matter of library policy for all age groups.

May I plug my laptop power cord into the library's AC outlets?

While fully charged batteries are recommended, outlets are being provided at newly-renovated libraries specifically for this purpose.  At other libraries, an outlet may be available and may be used provided that the power cord does not create a fire or tripping hazard. Please check with library staff on site.
